The Challenge
As a first-of-its-kind event in the region, early stakeholder direction was fluid, requiring a comprehensive design and marketing strategy. The challenge was twofold: generating interest among exhibitors while clearly communicating the event’s purpose—how emerging technology supports environmental sustainability. Additionally, as a senior partner, the Council aimed to minimize single-use materials, reduce paper waste, and promote reusable event merchandise, all while hosting an outdoor exhibition.
The Solution
I developed a bold, monochromatic design that balanced modern technology with an environmental focus. A layered, technology-inspired graphic became the campaign’s visual anchor, illustrating how innovation aids conservation efforts. To enhance engagement, I proposed a custom-branded Google Cardboard VR headset—crafted from recycled materials—to showcase existing VR experiences from different exhibitors. Collaborating with the Council’s development team, we centralised the content on a single platform accessible via personal smartphones. This solution not only directed users to the event website but also increased exhibitor visibility, extended audience engagement, and cross-promoted sister events. The headsets quickly became sought-after, extending the event’s reach beyond the region.
The Result
The event significantly elevated Doonan Reserve’s visibility and engagement, drawing increased interest from visitors, exhibitors, national government partners, and international organisations. The VR headset initiative was a major success, influencing similar projects across Australia and maintaining strong website engagement for over a year. Now in its fifth year, the event has evolved into the Sunshine Coast Open Data Expo, expanding beyond its original scope while still carrying forward the original design and campaign identity as of 2025.
Thanks so much for your work Gerry, you have perfectly captured our vision for the event.
